Lee Ryan Miller’s
Voyage Around the World
Lee
traveled around the world on Semester at Sea,® a program of the
Institute for Shipboard Education at the University of Pittsburgh.
Students took classes toward their college degrees while on a
ship that circumnavigated the globe.
Lee taught political science, focusing on issues of global
inequality.
Highlights
included attending an address by Cuban President Fidel Castro,
visiting the Amazon rainforest, going on safari in Tanzania,
visiting the site of the atomic bomb attack on Japan, and working
with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the slums of Brazil,
South Africa, and India.
The
spring 2003 voyage visited the following ports: Miami, Florida;
Nassau, Bahamas; Havana, Cuba; Salvador, Brazil; Cape Town, South
Africa; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Chennai (Madras), India; Nagasaki,
Japan; Pusan, Korea; Osaka, Japan; Kyoto, Japan; Nara, Japan;
Seward, Alaska; Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; and Seattle,
Washington.
Lee
Ryan Miller and acclaimed novelist Sheila Schwartz are writing a
murder mystery novel that draws upon their experiences on Semester
at Sea.®
